Simply put, guided meditations are when someone guides you in a specific type of meditation practice.
That practice may simply help you focus on your breath, to relax, or it can help you address specific areas in your life such as relationships, stress, or confidence.
Sometimes music is used and other times it’s just the person’s voice.
Guided meditations are not the same as hypnosis.
Hypnosis uses very specific steps to induce a trance so your subconscious mind can received directives that help you change specific behaviors such as smoking.
You can find a more detailed explanation of the difference between hypnosis and guided meditations on the Meditation page.
Why Use Guided Meditations
Guided meditations are a great way to begin a meditation practice especially the ones that help you focus on your breath.
They can also help you direct your practice towards a particular outcome like reducing feelings of stress, feeling more energetic, or opening yourself to expressing gratitude.
Even if you’re practicing by yourself, with a guided meditation you’re not alone. You’re meditating with someone who’s leading the way.
Then there are just some times when your mind just needs extra help in becoming calm, and guided meditations are great for doing that.
Plus, they’re enjoyable!
I use a variety of guided meditations. For several days, I may gravitate towards the same one. Then on other days, I let my intuition direct me to the one that I need to listen to.
Included in my guided meditations are ones by both men and women. Some days I need the comfort of listening to a man’s voice, and on other days it’s a woman’s voice that I want to listen to.
Where to Find Guided Meditations
You can find guided meditations on the internet that are free or have a price attached, as well as in a variety of stores that sell CDs.
If you’re new to guided meditations, the huge selection can be overwhelming.
Studies have shown that the greater the number of selections you have to choose from, the less likely it is that you’ll choose any of them.
To help you get started with guided meditations, here’s a site that I like and trust and that offers free meditations.
It’s called Purpose Fairy by Luminita Saviuc. Purpose Fairy is a personal growth blog, and Luminita gets her meditations from a variety of sources. I don’t know what her criteria is for choosing the ones she does, but she has a good selection.
And she makes it easy to decide on what to listen to by dividing them up into categories.
Please note: some of the items that she has listed as meditations are actually hypnosis sessions and tagged as such.
I have no vested interest in sending you over to Luminita’s site. I’m just offering it as a quick and easy way for you to get started.
My suggestion is to try a variety of them, and gradually begin building a library of the ones you like.
Below are the categories of meditations on her site (as of February 2016). Here’s a link to her meditations page.

Two Things To Keep in Mind
The first thing to remember is to always use your best judgment in deciding to take a particular course of action.
The second thing to regularly remind your self about is this: to get the benefits you want from any type of meditation practice, including guided meditations, you have to practice on a regular basis.
That means meditating at least once per day.
That’s the other nice thing about guided meditations, they make it easy for you to practice. All you have to do is commit to doing the practice.
Setting the same time aside every day, even putting it in your calendar, will help make it become a regular part of your life.
